Glass Walls for Draper Labs in Tech Square
Draper Laboratory is a world-renowned not-for-profit applied research and development organization based in Cambridge, Mass. A Colonial Systems field team led by foreman Ed Pimentel was on site at Draper during much of January for a project that was one phase of a building-wide renovation at 555 Technology Square.
Working on the 7th floor, the Colonial team installed a little more than 400 linear feet of Transwall architectural walls for private and executive offices and conference rooms. The team was also responsible for the installation of Knoll workstations and other workspace product. Our client dealer for the project is Office Resources, a leading Knoll dealer based in Boston.
The ONE by Transwall® modular glass wall system is the architectural wall solution selected for this project. The installation at Draper includes 34 frameless sliding doors and 6 frameless pivot doors.
Cold Weather Compounds Logistical Complications
The project required a long vertical push to load-in and stage the product on site. John Moriarty and Associates (JMA), the general contracting and construction management firm for the project, built a temporary loading dock at ground level and connected it to a hoist mounted to the side of the building to move product and personnel between the ground and the building’s roof. A system of temporary ramps provided safe passage across the roof, into the penthouse and down to the 7th floor.
“This was all going on in January,” explained Travis Cormier, the Colonial Systems project manager. “Our installers were challenged pretty much every day with cold, windy weather and potentially hazardous rooftop conditions. The team appreciated that JMA made sure the temporary pathway on the roof was clear of ice after the snowfalls and freezing rains.”
Architectural Walls Executive Calls It “Awesome Installation”
The Colonial team earned kudos from Greg Nolan, the vice president for architectural walls at Office Resources. Greg wrote:
“I want to compliment Colonial Systems and specifically Ed Pimentel and his crew for an awesome installation of Transwall glass walls at Draper in Cambridge. Your guys did a great job on furniture as well, as is obvious in a couple of the attached shots (Knoll Autostrada/Anchor, Calibre files, Interpole, monitor arms).”
Congratulations on a great outcome with the Transwall system to carpenters Don Bruno, Billy Harrison, Russ Loder, Brendan Neenan, Billy Nickerson and Scott Ranlett, and glaziers Mike Daggett, Jon Merrill and Matt Schorle. And thanks to the entire Colonial project team for earning high praise from a demanding client.
